Latina women represented 49 percent of all Latinos who matriculated into medical school in 2004. From 1980 to 2004, the number of Latina medical school graduates per year jumped from 93 to 485. Only 3 percent of Latina women are represented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM, fields, while women in total make up 24 percent of the STEM workforce. It comes as no surprise to most that there’s a sustained pay gap between men and women in the American work force, but today we look beyond the gap between just men and women and instead recognize how race and ethnicity impacts this divide. Today, Latinas are paid only 54 cents compared to a White, non-Hispanic man’s one dollar for completing similar work. For Black women the gap is 63 cents, and for Native American women it’s 58 cents. But in these cases, labels can help students receive the necessary services to achieve their academic goals.
